2 INDIANS, 2 CAVALIERS ON ALL-STATE FIRST TEAM

Lakeland and Southampton combined to place four players on the All-State first team, chosen by the Virginia High School Coaches Association last week.

The Cavaliers' Darius Bryant and Antoine Riddick joined the Indians' Kenneth Williams and William Brown.

Williams, a senior, earned first team on offense as a tackle and defense as a linebacker, while Brown, also a senior, was named as a running back. Brown led the Bay Rivers District in regular season touchdowns and finished with 29, while rushing for 1,323 yards on 223 carries.

Bryant and Riddick spearheaded the Lakeland defense. Bryant, a junior defensive lineman, led the team with seven sacks and was second in tackles with 61. Riddick, a senior defensive back, had 50 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

LaShawn Pugh, a senior defensive end, and Chris White, a senior defensive lineman, earned second team honors for Nansemond River, while Southampton's Rico Ivey was named to the second team as a defensive back.

Honorable mentions were: Lindell Hunter, kick returner, Lakeland; Reginald Wiggins, running back, Lakeland; Diran Cowell, linebacker, Lakeland; James Temple, guard, Lakeland; LaShawn Pugh, tight end, Nansemond River; Carlandous Banks, wide receiver, Franklin; and William Brown, linebacker, Southampton.
