CRIME LINE

Local police are asking the public to help solve these cases:

CHESAPEAKE

Around 12:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 4, a woman's vehicle broke down near Elbow Road and Centerville Turnpike.

A man stopped under the pretense of offering help to the woman. Instead, he assaulted her and tried to rape her. Fortunately, a citizen stopped to assist and scared the assailant away.

The suspect was described as a white male in his 40s, 5 feet 5 inches tall with a thin build and brown hair. He was driving a large older-model vehicle. Since this information was released, the person who helped scare the woman's assailant has come forward and was able to give a description.

NORFOLK

The Norfolk Sweeps Clean program will move into downtown Norfolk in January when city and state inspectors check properties for compliance of codes and health regulations.

Downtown Norfolk will be the latest stop for Norfolk Sweeps Clean, which Norfolk City Council started this year to abate and eradicate blight. Studies have shown that urban blight is an indirect contributor to increased crime.

The program uses the Police Assisted Community Enforcement program neighborhoods.

Norfolk Sweeps Clean will begin in downtown's Gold Sector on Monday and continue to Jan. 19.

Property owners are encouraged to voluntarily rid their properties of graffiti, trash, debris, peeling paint, torn screens, structural deficiencies, and other unsightly and potentially dangerous problems that violate city code and health regulations.

Downtown Norfolk is bounded at the north by Olney Road and Virginia Beach Boulevard, by the Elizabeth River at its southern and western boundaries, and by St. Paul's Boulevard on the east.

From Monday to Jan. 7, property owners will be able to participate in an amnesty week. They may place any items - except hazardous waste - at curbside for pickup on the day their trash is regularly scheduled for collection. All items must be properly tied or bundled.

Starting Monday, Jan. 8, 30 Norfolk inspectors will kick off the curbside inspection of properties. Inspectors from the departments of City Planning and Codes Administration, Health, Solid Waste, and Zoning will issue notices for violations.

For further information, call City Planning and Codes Administration at 664-6509.
