Dr. John Cole Smith, 60, of 400 Kingsale Road, died Jan. 1, 1996.
A native of Anniston, Ala., he was the son of the late Earl C. and Bertha Northrop Smith and the widower of Nancy Moore Smith. He was retired from the Tidewater Research Center Extension of Virginia Tech. Dr. Smith received his B.S. and M.S. from Auburn University, his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University and was a member of the Tidewater Chapter of the Auburn University Alumni Association and served on its Board of Directors. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Izaak Walton League and served as a volunteer for the Literacy Council.
Survivors include a daughter, Anne Northrop Smith of Suffolk; son, Robert Earl Smith of Mobile, Ala.; grandson, Brendan Tyler Smith; brother, Thomas Andrew Smith of Lookout Mountain, Ga.; and his stepmother, Elizabeth Deane Smith of Chattanooga, Tenn.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church by the Rev. H. Vance Man III, with entombment in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends in the R. W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home today from 7 to 9 p.m. and at other times at the home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 1413, Suffolk, Va. 23439.
