The medical examiner's office in Norfolk determined Tuesday that the city's 27th and final homicide victim of 1995 died from a single stab wound to the chest.
The body of Oscar White, 35, of 28th Street, was found by police at 8:21 a.m. Sunday in an apartment on 28th Street.
Later Sunday, police charged James B. Butts, 52, of 28th Street with murder.
White's death eclipsed by one the murder total of 1994, when 26 people were killed in Newport News, said Bobby Kipper, spokesman for the Newport News Police Department.
