Seven-time state field hockey champion Cox has proven on the field that its players can play with the best in the country. As a result of a tryout at the national A Camp at Rutgers University over the holidays, Falcons Kim Miller and Katie McDonald have earned berths on the 16-player U-18 national team. Teammate Robin Dwyer was named an alternate.
The three Cox players were chosen from more than 60 participants from around the country.
``It was kinda cool,'' said Miller, a senior forward who was named to the team for the second straight year. ``Nobody could believe that there were three of us from the same high school team and they were asking us all these questions.''
``I was shocked,'' McDonald, a junior forward, said. ``But really excited.
``I thought it was going to be a difficult week going in, but once we were finished, it seemed like a piece of cake even though I was in pain during the week. We did physical things, skills, drills and played games every day.''
McDonald finished last fall's season with 24 goals and 17 assists.
Miller's repeat selection was no surprise. The leading scorer in Virginia Group AAA history, Miller is coming off a season in which she led the Falcons to a national-record seventh-straight state championship with 63 goals and 15 assists. She finished her career with 160 goals. Both goal totals rank third nationally.
Dwyer, a senior midfielder, finished with eight goals and nine assists. She'll attend Princeton.
The junior national team will travel to the Netherlands in the spring for an international competition.
``Six days in Holland, I am so excited about that,'' McDonald said. ``I'm still really shocked about the whole thing.'' ILLUSTRATION: Kim
