Four candidates, including one incumbent, are on the list of early filers for four contested seats on the Dare County Board of Commissioners.
A Nags Head parent and businesswoman will also run for one of three seats up for grabs on the Dare County Board of Education.
Tuesday was opening day to qualify for county, state and federal offices throughout North Carolina.
Current Commission Vice Chairman Clarence Skinner, a Democrat, filed for the May 7 primary in commission District 1. Retired Ship's Captain Hiram Gallop, a frequent critic of the commission, will challenge Skinner for the right to represent Roanoke Island and the Dare County mainland on the commission.
In District 2, which includes Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and Colington, Tommy G. Perkins will seek the seat currently held by Commission Chairman Robert V. ``Bobby'' Owens Jr. Owens has said he plans to seek re-election, and has through Feb. 5 to file. Perkins, who lives in Kill Devil Hills, is running as a Libertarian.
In District 3, Cheryl Byrd, a member of the Dare County League of Women Voters, is running for the seat currently held by Commissioner Sammy Smith. Byrd has qualified as a Republican.
And in the District 4 seat currently held by Joseph ``Mac'' Midgett, Republican Doug Price qualified Tuesday. District 4 includes Hatteras Island.
Only one candidate filed qualifying papers Tuesday in the county school board race. Nags Head businesswoman Pamela ``Susie'' Walters will seek the seat currently held by The Rev. David Daniels.
Walters and her husband Tim own and operate Seamark Foods. Three seats are up in the non-partisan school board race. by CNB
