DR. HUGH G. STOKES JR.

Dr. Hugh Gregorie Stokes Jr., 79, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 1996, in Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Stokes, a lifelong Rotarian, was a past president of Williamsburg, Va. Rotary Club. He was a graduate of Emory University School of Medicine and practiced family medicine for 26 years in Williamsburg. After post-graduate psychiatry training, he completed his medical career as a psychiatrist. At the time of his retirement, he was medical director of Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg. He was a fellow of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Stokes was a major in the Army Medical Corps during World War II, in the European theater.

Stokes was a member of the board of Albany Community Hospice and Salvation Army. He was a charter volunteer with Alzheimer Caretaker Time-Out (ACTO) program at First United Methodist Church. He was an active community volunteer and was a former Salvation Army Volunteer of the Year. At the time of his death, he was serving as the 1995 chairman of the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Drive.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Churchwell Stokes; a son, Hugh Gregorie Stokes III of Richmond; two daughters, Peggy Stokes Nielson of Albany and Ann Stokes Hutchinson of Juneau, Alaska; four stepsons, James O. Hall Jr. of Atlanta, John Churchwood Hall of Miami Beach, Fla., Robert Mark Hall of Greenwood, S.C., and David Wilmot Hall of Atlanta; a stepdaughter, Charlene Hall Maynard of Albany; and nine grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Albany Community Hospice or Albany Symphony Children's Concert Series. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today in St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The Revs. Dr. Thomas A. Downs and Dr. Donald M. Kea will officiate. The remains will be cremated and buried in Memorial Garden at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
