Traces of asbestos were found and removed from two closets at Thalia Elementary School, district officials said.
The announcement came in the wake of the discovery and abatement of asbestos at Cooke Elementary School in December. Some contained asbestos remains in that school and will be removed during the summer. The same company, Critical Hygiene Inc., tested at both schools after asbestos abatement projects were completed in the summer of 1995.
Air samples taken in the Thalia classrooms housing both closets tested clear before and after the asbestos was removed, according to a statement released Wednesday by the school district. A different company did the recent analysis at Thalia and Cooke to determine that health standards were being met.
The City Attorney's Office has been consulted about the responsibility of the cleanup and monitoring firms involved in the abatement projects last summer, according to the statement. It was not immediately clear if the companies performed abatement work at other schools. Thalia, located in Thalia Gardens, was tested as a precaution after the discovery of problems at Cooke, a Beach borough school. by CNB
