A Chesapeake woman's relief at getting help in an emergency quickly turned into a horror recently.
Early in the morning of Dec. 4, the woman had car trouble near the intersection of Elbow Road and Centerville Turnpike. Soon, a man she thought to be a good Samaritan stopped to help. But instead of assistance, the man assaulted and attempted to rape her.
Another passing driver proved to be the true good Samaritan when he stopped and scared the assailant away. Then before the woman could thank him or even get his name, the real helper also disappeared.
For different reasons, everyone involved in the incident prefers to remain anonymous. For safety, the woman does not want her name released. The man who stopped the attack later identified himself, but for personal reasons does not want to be identified. He and the victim were able to give a description to the police.
Chesapeake Police are eager to discover the identity of the attacker. They are asking anyone who was in the Centerville Turnpike area and who may have seen a white man about 40 years old driving a late-model car to call. The attacker is described as being about 5-foot-5 with brown hair and a thin build.
Callers can remain anonymous by calling the Chesapeake Crime Line at 487-1234 or they can talk directly with Officer E.N. Jones at 547-6809. ILLUSTRATION: Assault suspect
