The Churchland girls and the Indian River boys seemingly are the teams to beat in Southeastern basketball as district play resumes tonight.
Oscar Smith, with an early season victory over Indian River while several of the Braves were still involved in football, already has established itself as a darkhorse contender in the boys division. Both Great Bridge and Oscar Smith loom as contenders for the girls title.
Churchland rates a solid choice for city honors among the girls teams. But an improved Wilson team is expected to push the Truckers for the boys crown.
The early scoring leaders in the district are Indian River's Jason Capel and Churchland's Nicole Council. Capel sports a 21.6 average and is leading all pointmakers in South Hampton Roads. Council has a 17.4 mark and ranks fifth in the area.
The Southeastern District has three of the area's top 10 scorers in both divisions. In the boys division, Wilson's Perez Bottoms is No. 2 in the district and No. 3 in the area with a 20.7 average. Third in the conference and sixth overall is Great Bridge's Steve Hargrow, who averages 19.8.
Great Bridge's Lashelle Griffin is second in the league among the girl scorers with a 16.4 average. She ranks sixth in South Hampton Roads.
Deep Creek's Anecia Braithwaite is third in the district and eighth overall at 15.7.
In league games tonight, Norcom plays at Great Bridge, Indian River at Wilson, Oscar Smith at Churchland and Western Branch at Deep Creek.
