Out and about in the Beach sports scene:

NATIONAL RECOGNITION: Two Virginia Beach youth distance runners earned All-American honors at national meets.

Aspen Foster got her honor at the AAU National Cross Country Championships held at Missouri Southern State College late last year. The 8-year-old Kings Grant Elementary School third-grader finished 21st out of 150 runners in the 9-10 age group - completing the 3,000 meter course in 12:19.

The honor roll student also participates in soccer, swimming and basketball and took up running only last year.

Rolf Steier won All-American honors for the second-straight season, earning his status in the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships held in Baton Rouge, La.

The 11-year-old Kemps Landing Magnet School sixth-grader finished ninth out of 284 runners in the midget boys (11-12) age division. He finished the 3K course in 10:44. Every finisher ahead of him was 12, leaving him as a favorite for next year's championship.

The Beach FC United soccer standout also ran in the Norway Games last summer, running for the Sportsklub Vidar club and setting a national age group record of 2:27 in the 800 meter race.

Both youngsters run for the Tidewater Striders' New Energy youth team.

RAH RAH: While cheerleaders from many of the Beach's 10 high schools are returning from trips to New York, London and several college bowl games, four Tallwood cheerleaders are preparing for a trip to the Pro Bowl next month in Hawaii.

Claire Reyes, Krystal Meynardi, Joseph Figo and Charity Mosley were named high school All-American cheerleaders at a North Carolina State University camp last summer - earning the right to attend the bowl game.

Reyes is a two-time All-American.

FLAG CHAMPS: The Virginia Beach Flag Association recently crowned city champions in its three age divisions - bringing to an end a season that saw more than 110 teams competing.

The Aragona/Pembroke Raiders won the Pee Wee division for players 5-7 with a victory over the Woodstock Vikings.

The Larkspur Raiders defeated the Plaza Bears 13-7 in overtime to win the 8-10 junior division.

The Green Run Giants beat the Woodstock Giants 26-14 to capture the city title in the senior division for players 10-12.
