Virginia Beach Councilman Robert Dean has it right in expressing reservations about removing trees along Shore Drive to save drunken drivers from themselves (MetroNews, Dec. 20).
As with so many of our roadways, the problem along Shore Drive is much less a question of an unsafe roadway than a matter of totally irresponsible behavior.
In this instance, is it prudent or even conscionable to expend sizable public funds in what would almost certainly be a futile attempt to save drunken drivers from themselves? Lowering the speed limit coupled with increased police monitoring would seem to be an immediate, more-effective and less-costly solution.
Surely there are countless better ways to spend $1 million than the proposed modification along Shore Drive.
