Apostle John Thomas Jones, of the 2600 block of Barre St., died Dec. 29, 1995, in a nursing home.
Apostle Jones was born in Southampton County, Drewryville, Va., and was a resident of Norfolk for over 60 years. He was a member of the United House Of Prayer For All People, Norfolk No. 1. He was the proprietor of Jones Seafood Market for many years. He later joined the International Longshoreman Association Local (NU)1248 as a Stevedore and worked until he retired. He also worked as a private home improvement contractor and enjoyed vegetable farming for many years. In 1938 he was ordained a minister under the late Bishop C.M. Grace and served as pastor of several of the local churches within the United House Of Prayer Organization in Virginia and North Carolina.
Survivors include three daughters, Maggie L. Wilkins, Lillie M. Smith, and Deborah A. Jones, all of Norfolk; three sons-in-law, Vernon Wilkins, Elwood Smith and Apostle Frank Elliott, all of Norfolk; a sister, Romania Bowe of Long Island, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the United House Of Prayer For All People, Norfolk No. 1, by Apostle William R. Scott. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 1996, in the Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Friends may join the family at 2504 Ludlow St., Norfolk. A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Graves Funeral Home
