WOMAN DIES IN FIVE-CAR COLLISION ON EXPRESSWAY AT THE BEACH

A woman died Thursday morning on Route 44 after a five-car, chain-reaction collision pushed her car into a concrete traffic barrier, where it burst into flames, state police said.

The collision occurred on the westbound side of the Virginia Beach-Norfolk Expressway, near the Laskin Road on-ramp, said Tammy Van Dame, spokeswoman for the state police.

Van Dame said several people tried to pull the woman from the burning Ford Mustang, but they were held back by flames.

The victim's identity could not be released until relatives overseas were notified of her death.

Van Dame gave this account of the accident: About 5:45 a.m., a Buick Riviera, driven by Angela R. Crisp, ran into the back of a Nissan Sentra that had broken down in the right westbound lane of Route 44. The impact sent the Nissan spinning into the center lane to face oncoming traffic.

Moments later, an Oldsmobile pulled up behind the Nissan in the center lane with its hazard lights flashing, but the Oldsmobile was struck by the Mustang.

The Mustang was then hit by a Ford Taurus station wagon driven by Edward T. Miles. Then the Mustang careened into the barrier and burst into flames.

Crisp, 36, and Miles, 51, suffered minor injuries. Crisp's passenger, Carrie Kimble, 40, also suffered minor injuries.

All three, from Virginia Beach, were treated at Virginia Beach General Hospital and released.

The accident is under investigation.
