Director of Human Resources Fagan Stackhouse's explanation about Virginia Beach police pay was excellent (letter, Dec. 23, 1995).
Another good way to ensure that police receive appropriate pay for services they perform is to add ``hazardous duty pay,'' ``hostile fire pay'' or ``combat pay'' to their salaries.
This would be akin to what the applicable armed services get when they work under such conditions. The only difference between the two is that the police are under constant threat of bodily harm.
Both parties deserve better pay!
