Melvin Lee Proffitt, 74, of the 2400 block of Deerfield Crescent, died Jan. 8, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital.
Mr. Proffitt was a native of War, W.Va. He was retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service and was a retired electrician at Naval Air Station, Norfolk. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Chesapeake, and a volunteer at Maryview Hospital for 11 years.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Bright Proffitt; a daughter, Janice Batten of Suffolk; two sons, Teddy Proffitt of Portsmouth and Harry Proffitt, formerly of Chesapeake; two sisters, Ellen Freeman and Betty Crouse; two brothers, Joe Proffitt and Tommy Proffitt; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Carlton Smith. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
