PETE BRETT JR.

On Friday, Jan. 5, 1996, at 8 p.m. God opened the windows of heaven and received his son, Pete Eley Brett Jr., into his kingdom.

Born on May 25, 1927, in Mapleton, N.C., Pete was one of eight children born to the late Pete E. and Ethel Brett. He was the youngest of four boys.

At an early age, he accepted Christ and was fellowshipped into the Parkers Grove Baptist membership.

Pete attended the public schools in Hertford County. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served three years. Upon returning from the service, he worked several years at Union Camp in Franklin, Va., and, blessed with a beautiful singing voice, he sang as a soloist and was a member of several singing groups.

In 1962, Pete moved with his family to Norfolk. Pete worked at Globe Iron Construction as a mechanic until his retirement in 1989. During his tenure at Globe Iron, Pete was active in the union, serving in many leadership capacities, including holding the office of president for more than six years.

Pete had a deep passion for life. He was blessed with a keen sense of humor and was well-liked by all who met and knew him. He was a particular favorite of all his nieces and nephews.

He leaves to mourn his passing a loving wife, Mattie V. Brett; a daughter, Rebecca L. Brett of Norfolk; a son, Hiram L. Brett; four grandchildren, Samantha, Kelly, Kyle, and Tion Brett; three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Sessoms, Mrs. Dorothy Catling, and Mrs. Murlie Gatling; two brothers, Mr. John Arthur Brett and Mr. Hugh Lee Brett; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a large circle of kind and loving friends.

The funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Hugene Fields in Parkers Grove Baptist Church, Mapleton, N.C. Burial will be in Parkers Grove Cemetery. Graves Funeral Home in charge. There will be a wake service today from 6 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends may join the family at the residence.
