SLIP-SLIDING AWAY . . . ANYWAY YOU CAN

Fun-seekers who had watched their chances at a record snowfall melt away with Sunday's rain got a reprieve Monday. Several new inches of snow fell across the city closing schools and businesses, and opening the ``slopes'' to some rare wintertime activities.

While many commuters were stuck in airports, bus stations and in their vehicles, kids of all ages were on the move, taking whatever gear that would slide to Mount Trashmore. Trash pickup was canceled, but trash can lids got a workout anyhow.

The fun also led to problems, as the day progressed. There were some broken bones and dislocated shoulders.

Perhaps a walk on the beach would have been safer. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by VICKI CRONIS

Jaclyn Noftsinger, 12, is having a fine time spinning down the

slopes at Mount Trashmore Monday, and Jessica Kenley, 11, isn't far

behind. Their fun was cut short, however, because they got so wet.

Both girls are from Virginia Beach.
