James L. ``Corky'' Hampton, 67, retired Labor Leader, died at a local hospital, Saturday, Jan. 6, 1996, at 9:15 p.m. He resided in the 3300 block of Courtney Road.
A native of Hardin County, Tenn., he was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1948 and worked from 1948 to 1951 for Seaboard Railroad and Stone and Webster Engineering Corp. He joined Ironworker's Union Local (NU)79 in Norfolk in 1952; and, while following the Ironworker's trade, worked in 38 states and five foreign countries. He was elected Business Agent for Local (NU)79 in 1963 and served in that capacity until 1967 when he was appointed to the International Staff of the Ironworkers Union. He worked out of the District Council Office in Washington, D.C., where he served the Union Locals in five states and the District of Columbia until his retirement in 1968. He worked on special assignments for the General President throughout the United States and served as contract negotiator for the last 10 years.
He was a member of Lake Drummond Lodge (NU)178, A.F. & A.M. and Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies.
Survivors include his wife, Harriet Dinzes Hampton of Portsmouth; two daughters, Laura Johnson and Stacey Hampton of Portsmouth, a son, Michael Hampton of Portsmouth, a son-in-law, Donnie Johnson of Portsmouth and a grandson, Travis Johnson of Portsmouth.
A funeral service will be conducted in Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, Thursday, Jan. 11, 1996, at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Masonic Rites will be accorded. Memorial donations may be made to the Lung Transplant Support Group, c/o Sentara Norfolk or Lung Association.
