INEZ P. VALENTINE

Inez Peterson Valentine, 89, of 426 Highland Ave., died Jan. 8, 1996, in Hillhaven Nansemond Nursing Center, Suffolk.

She was a native of Savannah, Ga., and the widow of William Carey ``Bill'' Valentine and daughter of the late Bessie Rustin Peterson and Everett Stewart Peterson.

Mrs. Valentine was a retired second-grade teacher with Highland-Biltmore School in Portsmouth, having ended her teaching career in 1973.

Mrs. Valentine was a member of First Baptist Church and the Ladies Adult 8 Sunday school class and was its pianist. She was also a member of the church choir and the senior citizens choir, the Suffolk Woman's Club, and the past matron of Sinai Chapter (NU)18, Order of the Eastern Star and its organist. She was former participant in the Golden Olympics and had won more than 40 medals for swimming and track and field events.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Martha Jo V. Rawles and Tommy Rawles of Roswell, Ga.; two sisters, Eunice P. Kenelly of Rockville, Md., and Lucille P. Fairchild of Detroit, Mich.; a brother, E.S. Peterson Jr. of Columbia, S.C.; and a granddaughter, Amy Rawles Andrews and her husband, Doug, of Lilburn, Ga.

She was predeceased by a son, William Carey Valentine Jr. and a granddaughter, Jennifer L. ``Jenny'' Rawles.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home, Suffolk, by the Rev. Charles W. Thompson. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. Eastern Star Rites will be accorded in the funeral home Thursday at 7 p.m. and afterward the family will remain until 8 p.m. for visitation.
