ERNAL W. FOSTER

Captain Ernal W. Foster, 85, died Jan. 8, 1996 of heart failure.

He was the son of the late Susan B. and Charles B. Foster and is survived by his wife, Hazel Midgett Foster; his son, Ernal W. Foster Jr. of Manteo; one brother, Gaston Foster of Hatteras; two sisters, Lola Gaskins of Hatteras and Edna Garrish of Chesapeake; and two grandchildren, Tiffany and Christopher Foster.

Capt. Foster was a lifelong resident of Hatteras Village and was a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church where he served as a member of the church board. He also served on the founding boards of directors of the Hatteras Fire Department, the Hatteras Medical Center and the Hatteras Island Water Association. He is best known as one of the poineers of offshore sportfishing in North Carolina, having established his charter fishing business, the Albatross Fleet, in 1937. In 1951, he personally caught the blue marlin which began the serious pursuit of billfish off the N.C. coast. He remained committed to the conservation of sealife and to the interests of both sport and commercial fishing thoughout his life.

Funeral service swill be held at the Hatteras United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Jim Huskins. Burial will be in the family cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Albatross Fund, Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, PO Box 191, Hatteras, N.C. 27943. Twiford Island Chapel, Hatteras, is in charge.
