The City Council approved a $4 million waterfront project on Tuesday and learned that another marina project may also be on its way, boosting the city on its path to its new vision and an improved image.
The council awarded a contract and approved spending $1.8 million on the new High Street Inlet and Ferry Dock. Tidewater Regional Transit has promised to pay nearly $1.9 million for the project. That board is scheduled to approve those funds today.
City Manager Ronald W. Massie had planned to use city funds, once set aside for dredging Scott's Creek, for the High Street Inlet project. But he learned that the city's business recruiters are in final negotiations for a new marina on Scott's Creek, which dead-ends at London Boulevard in front of the new I.C. Norcom High School.
A marina project was adopted for that area in the city's new economic development plan, but residents of that area have been working for a decade to entice a marina operator to that waterfront.
However, Steve Herbert, the assistant director for the city's economic development department, told the council Tuesday that the developer has overcome a number of obstacles. The Industrial Development Commission still has concerns over how the project will be financed and will meet with the developer in February to resolve those. by CNB
