A federal judge who issued a temporary injunction in North Carolina waters on a moratorium against the commercial harvest of weakfish is requiring a rapid response from seafood dealers and the state's Division of Marine Fisheries for weakfish harvest statistics.
U.S. District Judge Robert G. Doumer has ordered state fishery managers to submit all trip ticket data for weakfish landings from Dec. 21 through Jan. 15 to the court by Jan. 22. Weakfish landings from Jan. 16 to Jan. 26 must be submitted to the court by Feb. 2.
Because of the accelerated time frame, the Division of Marine Fisheries is requiring seafood dealers to submit their December trip tickets on weakfish (also known as gray trout) to the state office by Jan. 10.
Landings records from weakfish harvests from Jan. 1 to Jan. 15 will be picked Jan. 16. And officials will collect trip tickets for Jan. 16 to Jan. 26 landings on Jan. 29.
