`I CAN'T COOK BUT I DO SET A CUTE TABLE,''

`I CAN'T cook but I do set a cute table,'' says the woman in one current commercial.

She gives the impression if the table looks good, the food doesn't matter.

But bad food is bad food, no matter how many ceramic figurines - a la Martha Stewart - you place on the table.

Good food, on the other hand, can be elevated to fine dining with the proper setting. To that end, The Chrysler Museum is host to the annual Artful Setting: A Festival of Fine Design.

This year's show, Feb. 9 through 11, will feature more than 40 table settings, lectures and a preview party. Tickets may be purchased for one event, or the weekend; call 461-6236 or 489-1451.

Here's a schedule of events:

7 to 10 p.m. Feb. 9: Gala Preview Party with hors d'oeuvres, desserts, jazz and a viewing of the settings. Tickets: $50.

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 10 and 11: Exhibition of settings only. Tickets: $10.

10 a.m. Feb. 10: Exhibition of settings and lecture, ``Collecting Today With Dollars and Sense'' by Jay Cantor, senior vice president and director of museum services for Christie, Manson & Woods International Inc. Tickets: $25.

2 p.m. Feb. 10: Exhibition, book signing and lecture, ``Formal Country Style: The Best of Both Worlds'' by Pat Ross, author of ``Formal Country'' and ``Formal Country Entertaining.'' Tickets: $25.
