VIRGINIA BEACH - Dr. Philip R. Wohl, 51, an associate professor emeritus in mathematics at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, died Jan. 8, 1996, at his home in Virginia Beach.

Dr. Wohl was a native of New York. He received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Cornell University in 1971. He held teaching positions at New York University and Carleton University prior to accepting an appointment as an assistant professor in the department of mathematics and statistics at Old Dominion University in 1974. He was promoted to the rank of associate professor in 1980. During his time at Old Dominion University, Dr. Wohl made extensive service area contributions through his participation in numerous committee activities at the department, college and university levels. Among his many achievements are having chaired the Faculty Senate from 1985 to 1987, as well as numerous other Faculty Senate committees, including the Library Committee and the Tenure Committee, where he developed the Tenure Guidelines, which were adopted as university policy.

He served as graduate program director from the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computational and applied mathematics from 1979 to 1989. Dr. Wohl played an active role in developing the applied mathematics curriculum at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. He was responsible for the introduction of the highly successful mathematical biology course and was one of three faculty who obtained external funding to create computer labs and develop computer-based calculus courses. During his 21 years of dedicated service, Dr. Wohl provided distinguished service to his discipline, university, college and department. His devotion to scholarship and teaching has earned him the respect of his colleagues and students. His professional memberships include SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics), APS (American Physical Society), SEC (Society for Engineering Science), and a honorary member of the Golden Key National Honor Society.

Survivors include his wife, Kale Warren Wohl of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Jennifer M. Wohl and Nicole B. Wohl, both of Virginia Beach; his father, Oscar Wohl of New York; a sister, Helane Leta of Salt Lake City, Utah; aunt, Selma Wilson of Salt Lake City; cousin, Michael Macknin of New Jersey; and other family members, friends, colleagues, and former students.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach, by Rabbi Israel Zoberman and Father William J. Dale. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Norfolk. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Thursday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be sent to The Philip Robert Wohl Mathematics Scholarship Fund, c/o Old Dominion University, 129 New Administration Bldg., Norfolk, Va. 23529.
