Helen McKenney Stock, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 1996, at an Elizabeth City hospital.
Mrs. Stock was born March 27, 1906, in Washington, D.C. She was a graduate of Reading High School in Reading, Mass., New Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Concord, N.H., in 1927, Boston University School of Nursing, B.S. Nursing 1950; masters in Health Education 1953, Boston University School of Education in 1957; a post-graduate of eye, ear, nose and throat in Massachusetts General Hospital for six months and Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital for three months. She was affiliated with the American Association of Nurses and New Hampshire State Nurses Association and was registered in New Hampshire. She was a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, 3594th Command Unit from March 1941 to November 1945. She was employed with the U.S. Army Corps, South Pacific and the U.S.A. She received the American Defense Service Ribbon and The Asiatic Pacific Theatre Service Ribbon.
She was a night supervisor for Memorial Hospital on Concord, N.H., in 1929. She was a staff nurse at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital, Boston, Mass., in 1938 and was on private duty in 1939. She supervised at an eye, ear, nose and throat clinic; supervised out-patient clinic, was the head nurse of E.E.N. and T. Ward; head nurse of neurological convalescent ward; in charge of nurses quarters (four buildings) housekeeping and general supervision of quarters in 1941. She was employed with the Veteran's Administration Nursing Service in Tucson, Ariz., and in charge of bedside care of tuberculosis patients and terminal care in 1945; a staff nurse in Concord Memorial Hospital in Concord, N.H., with bedside nursing care and general care of patients in 1948. An industrial nurse at Hunt-Spiller Manufacturing Company in South Boston, Mass.; her duties involved industrial accident care, incidental health counseling, general administration of the first-aid department and workman's compensation insurance in 1951. She supervised International Ladies Garment Workers Union Health Center in Boston, Mass. in 1953. She was the assistant school nurse at the Reading School System in Reading, Mass. She was an industrial nurse for the C.M. Hall Lamp Company, which included health, life and workman's compensation insurance; administration of the first-aid, health counseling, assistant personnel manager. She assisted school physician in physicals; did testing, counseling, home visits and follow-up care; cared for the records and ran clinics from 1962-63 in Wolfeboro, N.H. She married Frank L. McKenney on Oct. 4, 1932, at St. John's Church in Concord, N.H., by Rev. P.G. Kenneally. After her husband's death, she was married to Herbert Alexander Stock on Dec. 9, 1955. She was the daughter of the late Harry S. and May Williams Merriam.
She is survived by one daughter, Linda Wasson of Kitty Hawk; two grandsons, David Wasson, attorney, in Diamond Bar, Calif., Douglas and Lori Wasson, financial analyst, of LaHabre, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Ashley Wasson, also of LeHabre, Calif.
A military burial will be held Jan. 22, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, Calif. A visitation will be held today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo. Twiford's Funeral Home, Manteo, is in charge of these arrangements.
