JOHN A. ELLIOTT

John Ambrose Elliott, 81, of Route 3, Box 216, Bamberg, S.C., formerly of Hertford and Elizabeth City, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 10, 1996, in his home.

A native of the Chapanoke section of Perquimans County, he was the son of the late Joseph P. Elliott and Linda Benton Elliott. He was a retired farmer, member of Ehrhardt Baptist Church, and American Legion Post (NU)126, Hertford. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and the Coast Guard for six years.

Survivors include his wife, Hettie Nixon Elliott; daughter, Beckie E. Rosenheim of Elizabeth City; son, John A. Elliott Jr. of Elizabeth City; two stepsons, Sidney Layden Jr. of Ehrhardt and James Layden of Bamberg; three sisters, Lessie E. White of Winfall, Sarah E. Hollowell of Edenton, and Bell Elliott of Hertford; brother, L.B. ``Ranzy'' Elliott of Hertford; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Swindell Funeral Home, Hertford, and at other times at the home of his sister, Lessie White in Winfall. Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. in Ehrhardt Baptist Church. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Westlawn Memorial Park, Elizabeth City, with the Rev. Joe Griffith officiating.
