CHESAPEAKE POLICE STILL TRYING TO DETERMINE WHO SHOT GIRL, 17

Police on Wednesday were still sorting through evidence to determine who shot at several officers serving a drug-related search warrant at a Broad Street apartment Tuesday.

One of the apartment's occupants, a 17-year-old girl whose name wasn't released, was wounded in the shoulder when a shootout erupted between the three people inside the apartment and the officers. It still wasn't clear Wednesday if the girl was shot by the officers or one of her companions.

None of the officers was hurt.

Police spokeswoman Elizabeth Jones said the officers knocked on the apartment door in the 2500 block of Broad Street, identified themselves, and then smashed into the residence with a hand-held battering ram. That method of quick entry is common when police are searching for drugs or other evidence residents could destroy.

Jones said someone in the apartment shot first, and the officers returned fire.

The officers confiscated a handgun and drugs from the apartment. Police arrested the two men and identified them as Wayne Evans, 28, of the 3200 block of Camelot Blvd., and Juan White, 19, who lives in the apartment.

Evans was charged with obstruction of justice. White was charged with obstruction of justice and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

Jones said other charges are pending. The occupants could face charges of attempted capital murder of a police officer.
