Police said Wednesday they will seek murder charges against a man who shattered a cast-iron frying pan over the head of a relative Jan. 3.
Initially, hospital workers believed Joe Waller, 58, would survive an attack by his nephew, but he died Tuesday just hours after speaking with a detective. It is the city's first homicide of the year.
Police said a domestic dispute in a home on Beautiful Street off Birdneck Road led to the fatal assault. Waller's nephew, 25-year-old Anthony T. Marks, allegedly struck Waller with the pan while the uncle was on a living-room couch. The frying pan shattered into six pieces, police said.
