ASSISTANT POLICE CHIEF ENDS 28-YEAR CAREER

Portsmouth Assistant Police Chief Col. Ronald Lewis, a 28-year veteran of the department, retired Jan. 1.

Lewis joined the city's Fire Department in 1967, but transferred to the police department two years later.

In 1975, Lewis was promoted to sergeant and two years later to lieutenant. He became a captain in 1982 and was promoted to assistant chief in 1994.

His has served as commanding officer of the detective bureau, uniform patrol, youth bureau, narcotics unit and operations bureau.

In 1981, Lewis graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigations' National Academy.

Officer John Holloway has been promoted to sergeant.

Since joining the force in 1992, Holloway has been assigned to the uniform division, and to the crime analysis and intelligence bureau, where he will remain temporarily.

Holloway holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Old Dominion University and is working on his master's. ILLUSTRATION: Lewis
