CITYWIDE SUMMIT TO FOCUS ON CRIME-REDUCTION PLAN

A City-Wide Crime Summit will be held from 1 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at Hunt-Mapp Middle School, 3701 Willett Drive.

The event is designed to bring Portsmouth citizens together to give input and work toward solutions to crime and quality of life issues in the city, according to information released by the Portsmouth Police Department.

The summit is sponsored by the police department, the Portsmouth Crime Prevention Steering Committee and other civic organizations and city agencies.

A presentation will be given on the city's new community policing effort, Neighborhood Enhancement Action Teams (NEAT), which has started in two neighborhoods now and is supposed to expand to other areas of the city in the future.

After the presentation, participants will break up into groups to brainstorm ways to create a workable and effective plan between police, citizens and local governmental agencies.

Transportation, child care and a meal will be provided to all persons attending the summit.

To register, call 399-5261, Ext. 275, by Jan. 10.

On Jan. 11, local ministers will hold a preliminary meeting at Maryview Medical Center to discuss the summit and how religious leaders can unite to address crime and related concerns.

The meeting will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in Conference Room B on the second floor of the hospital.
