NOMINATIONS ARE SOUGHT FOR SPORTS AWARD

Nominations are now being accepted for the Sports Person of the Year, the annual top award given at the Portsmouth Sports Club Jamboree.

The board of directors of the Sports Club has voted to name the award in honor of J. Herbert Simpson. Simpson recently retired as executive director of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. The lifelong Portsmouth resident was the first winner of the sports club award in 1947 and the only person to be chosen on two occasions. Simpson, 80, also was recognized in 1980.

Benn Griffin is serving as chairman of the selection committee to determine the 1995 recipient.

``We will accept nominations until Monday, Jan. 29,'' Griffin said. He can be contacted at the Portsmouth YMCA in Churchland. Written nominations should be sent to him at 4900 High Street West, Portsmouth, 23703.

Griffin said nominees should be active in Portsmouth sports activities on a volunteer basis. ``The focus should be their contributions during the year of 1995 but if there has been a history of positive contributions, those also should be indicated,'' he said.

This will be the 50th anniversary of the Sports Club. Jimmy Williams is serving as Jamboree chairman. by CNB
