KIDS GIVEN A SUPER TRIP TO SEE REDSKINS PLAY

Out and about in the Virginia Beach sports scene:

SUPER EFFORT: Bob Lane's Sports Superkids (formerly Redskins Superkids) rounded out the National Football League season in super fashion - a busload of children and their families attending the Christmas Eve Washington Redskins home game against the Carolina Panthers.

John Martine of Great Atlantic Travel donated the trip for the 12 families that totaled 55 youngsters and adults. Not only did he donate the overnight trip, he paid for a pizza party for the group the night before the game.

When the families returned to South Hampton Roads, there were additional presents including gift certificates and Christmas baskets donated by The Southern Way of Virginia Beach.

It was a fantastic Christmas for the children and their families, who got back into town late Christmas Eve, but with plenty of time to enjoy Christmas day at home.

Superkids is a program thought up by Lane four years ago in an effort to take children with serious illnesses to see NFL football games and meet some of the professional athletes.

``This has been the most successful year without a doubt,'' Lane said.

During prior Redskins home games last fall, Lane was able to take 19 other children from 11 families. Tom Bates and Randy Meekins of R.K. Chevrolet donated a custom van for those trips so each family and Lane could ride to Washington together.

Redskins public relations representative Mike McColl became a close friend of Lane and his Superkids, taking them onto the field to meet athletes for autographs and picture sessions.

Lane is hoping to expand his efforts to include trips to see Washington Bullets basketball, Washington Capitols hockey and Baltimore Orioles baseball games.

Anyone interested in helping Lane with his efforts can reach him at 486-3507.

WHAT A KICK: The Beach FC Desperados have earned themselves a reputation as one of the best Under-13 boys soccer teams in the country by capturing their divisional title in the Tampa Bay Sun Bowl tournament over the Christmas holidays.

The Desperados went 3-0-1 in bracket play to advance to the semifinal round - where the team demolished the Georgia state and Southeast Region champion Stone Mountain Storm 3-0.

In the championship, Beach FC faced the Michigan Wolves. The teams finished regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtimes tied at one apiece - forcing a penalty kick round.

There, Jeff Kozak, Chris Moxley, Martin Burwell and Kyle Hartley successfully scored and keeper Noah Palmer came up with a nice save to secure the victory.

Palmer was named the team's MVP for the tournament.

Desperados teammates include Bailey Allman, Sedric Boddie, Sam Clayman, Matt Greene, Rami Hollingsworth, Spencer Klein, R.C. Milne, Brendan Mahon, Kevin Murray, Jeremiah Roberts and Billy Lucas.

THREE CHEERS: The Southshore All-Star Wolfpack cheerleading squad has been invited to compete in the Can-Am competition in Myrtle Beach, S.C., in the spring.

While that's great news for the squad that includes 21 girls and two boys ranging in age from 9 to 16, rounding up the more than $7,000 needed by March 1 is going to be tough.

The team is currently thinking up fund-raising ideas and looking for sponsorships.

For more information on helping the squad represent Virginia Beach in this prestigious competition, call Cathie Klein at 481-9390.

GO FIGURE: A pair of Kempsville Middle School students recently enjoyed some successes in the world of figure skating.

Colin Shaw placed fourth in juvenile pairs at the United States Figure Skating Association Championships. Darcy Jones competed in the South Atlantic Regional championships in Pennsylvania.

NOT FOR GRANTED: Cape Henry and Norfolk collegiate schools have been awarded $500 grants from the Virginia Center for Orthopaedics to help improve their athletic departments.

Schools from Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake applied for the grants with winners being chosen from essays on necessity. MEMO: Got an interesting sports-related story to tell? If so, call The Beacon
