In its first meeting of the year, the Planning Commission named hotel owner Robert H. Vakos its new chairman.
Vakos, the owner of the Colonial Inn Motel and several other oceanfront hotels, will lead the 11-member body through an update of the city's comprehensive plan. He replaces E.R. Cockrell, a farmer and retired director of the city's Department of Agriculture, who held the post for two years.
Margaret L. Eure, a businesswoman, who served as the commission's secretary last year, was sworn in to her second term on the commission Wednesday and was named vice-chairwoman. Judith Rosenblatt, a lawyer and new head of the Virginia Beach Bar Association was also sworn in for her second term on the commission.
Cheryl J. Avery-Hargrove, an attorney, was named the commission's new secretary.
Charles M. Salle, an attorney with the law firm of Pender & Coward, was sworn in as a new member of the commission, replacing long-term member Daniel Arris.
In addition to revising the city's comprehensive plan, the commission this year will help determine land uses for city-owned land in the courthouse area, will support the development of a central business district around Pembroke Mall and will draw up plans to protect the Owl Creek watershed. by CNB
