GEORGE HOWELL

George Howell, 97, formerly of Portsmouth, died Jan. 3, 1996, in Deltona, Fla.

Mr. Howell, a native of Portsmouth, was the retired former owner of Howell Florist in Portsmouth and Mercury Florist in Hampton. He also retired from American Railway Express, Norfolk. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth and was a Navy veteran of World War I.

Survivors include a daughter, Audrey L. Smith of Suffolk; a grandson, Wesley K. Smith Jr. of Chesapeake; a nephew, Clyde Martin of Portsmouth; a cousin, Thelma M. Skelton of Chesapeake; two great-grandchildren, Donna Garris of Portsmouth and Michael Smith of Chesapeake; and two great-great-grandchildren, Larry H. Garris iII and Blake T. Garris of Portsmouth.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Philip J. Parker. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday and other times at 2913 Harbor Road, Suffolk.
