The Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority has closed the doors of its old quarters and moved to the former Paul D. Camp Community College site.
The department, which was operating across from city hall on Market Street, is now located at 530 E. Pinner St.
Bill Spinella, the department's development coordinator, said housing officials moved last Saturday.
``Pretty much everything is set up,'' Spinella said. ``We've been operating in a little bit of a mess, but we're slowly organizing and getting the offices straight.''
Spinella said the maintenance staff is now under the same roof as the rest of the department. The old building was too small for the maintenance department, which was housed in Colander-Bishop Meadows Apartments on Brooke Avenue.
Housing officials had long been searching for a new building, after complaining that they'd outgrown their old annex, which housed both the housing authority and social service departments.
The city had tried to get the housing authority to move into the old Suffolk High School building, saying the department should try to relocate to Downtown Suffolk at a time when the city is trying to revitalize it. The city is building a $13 million courthouse facility in the heart of downtown.
Housing officials had agreed to examine moving into the old high school, located off Freemason Street, but later said the building was too small.
The housing department is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. by CNB
