UNSANCTIONED 300 STILL A THRILL

The thrill is still the same, but there is no comparison in the reward.

Nick Adams rolled a 300 game in the Rockin Restaurant Tenpin League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. And there was the usual excitement in the 30-team league as Adams registered his 12 straight strike.

But when the 174-average bowler was finished for the night with his 707 series (a 183 opening game and a 224 closer) all he earned was a patch from the center.

No gold or silver ring or wrist watch. No plaque. No listing among the 30-plus bowlers in the Norfolk Bowling Association who will be recorded in the annual yearbook for the same accomplishment.

The Rockin Restaurant League is among a couple of dozen leagues across South Hampton Roads that elect not to sanction with the American Bowling Congress or the Women's International Bowling Congress.

``This is a new league, and we're hoping they come into our association,'' said Preston Carraway, secretary of the NBA. ``But this is a shining example to show the benefits of belonging to the association. In addition to the ring or watch for the 300, we offer a beautiful walnut plaque to the bowler with the score and date of the achievement.''

Bowler of the Week honors go to John Confalone, newest member in the coveted 800 Club.

Confalone blasted an 803 series in the Masters Tenpin League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven, stringing games of 279, 278 and 256.

It was the highest series yet rolled by Confalone, whose previous best was 785. He is already a member of the 300 Game Club, rolling a pair of perfectos in the 1992-93 season and another in 1993-94. He racked up several series over 700 last year.

Confalone carried a book average of 205 last season.

Tenpin topics: Danny Mausolf just missed the elusive 800 he has been seeking through the years, firing 794 in the PA Keglers League at Pinboy's of Military. Mausolf had games of 258, 257 and 279. ``It's the second chance I've had, needing a strike in the last frame,'' said Mausolf. Last year at the now-defunct Plaza Bowl, Mausolf shot 790 with nine strikes in a row in the final game and closing with a tap in the 10th. ``The same thing happened again,'' he said. ``I left the 10 pin. But one day I'm going to get that 800.'' . . . Reserved entries in the Norfolk Bowling Association Championship close Wednesday, Jan. 17. . . .
