CRIME LINE

Police need the public's help in solving these cases:

VIRGINIA BEACH

There were 222 cases of arson reported in Virginia Beach in 1995. They caused three deaths and $5,633,327 in damage. Already this year, a fire in the Linkhorn Shores section caused $650,000 damage.

On Friday, Jan. 5, about 1:30 a.m., the Fire Department was called to a home under construction on Taylors Point Road.

The fire was extinguished very quickly but caused extensive damage to the home, which was almost completed. Investigators say the fire was set.

In 1995, Crime Solvers received information that assisted the Police Department in the arrest of 219 people. They were charged with 402 crimes ranging from murder to larceny. And police recovered $1,424,580 in stolen property and drugs.

The board of directors approved payment of $24,520 in rewards to Crime Solvers callers.

During its 13 1/2 years, Crime Solvers has helped in the arrest of 4,104 people and clearance of 8,562 crimes.

Rewards paid out total $379,890.

CHESAPEAKE

Shortly before 11 p.m. on Dec. 18, a man walked into the Crown station in the 1200 block of N. George Washington Highway and robbed the clerk at gunpoint.

The suspect is described as black, in his 30s, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 165 pounds. He wore a black shirt, a blue Starter jacket and a black knit cap. He carried a black revolver with brown grips.

PORTSMOUTH

On Thursday, Dec. 21, about 7 a.m., a man entered the Burger King fast food restaurant in the 3300 block of Victory Blvd. Holding a gun, he jumped over the counter and demanded money from the employees. The manager was forced to open the safe; the suspect grabbed the money and fled out the back door.

He was last seen running toward Normandy Street.

The suspect is described as black, in his 20s, about 6 feet tall and about 180 pounds. He wore a black and yellow mask, a white and green coat, and blue jeans.

SUFFOLK

Vehicles have been broken into on several occasions throughout the city. Stolen items have mostly been electronics items, such as stereo equipment and speakers.

In the most recent incidents, two vans in the 700 block of N. Broad St. were broken into.

The thieves pried open a vent glass each time, and removed a 6-inch color television, a Goldstar VCR, a 12-inch color television and a Goldstar VCR.

On Dec. 29, a 1995 white and green SPX model Sea-Doo Jet ski was displayed for sale in front of 1528 Holland Road.

During the night on Dec. 30, thieves stole the jet ski and the trailer to which it was attached.

HAMPTON

On Jan. 5, shortly after 2:30 p.m., a man entered the Signet Bank at 4100 W. Mercury Blvd.

He approached the teller, said he had a handgun and demanded money. The entire robbery was captured on the bank's surveillance camera.

The robber is described as black, 25 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, and about 150 pounds.
