John Thomas Matthews, 79, of the 900 block of Sacony St., died Jan. 14, 1996.
Mr. Matthews, a retired grocery store owner, was a native of Farmville, N.C. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Annie T. Matthews; a daughter, Dora M. Ellsworth of Portsmouth; two sons, John Wilson of Norfolk and Geoffrey Wilson of Gloucester, Va.; three sisters, Nannie Lee Owens of Farmville, Captola Owens of Michaelsville, N.C., and Thelma Tyson of Chesapeake; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Robert Cofield Jr. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the funeral home from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today and other times at 350 Saunders Drive, Portsmouth. Memorial donations may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church Choir Fund or Building Fund.
