Thomas E. Schaut

PORTSMOUTH - Thomas E. Schaut, of 301 Florida Ave., the fourth son of Charles and Clara Pistner Schaut, was born at St. Marys, Pa., on March 18, 1923, and died Jan. 13, 1996, in his home.

After completing elementary school in St. Marys, he attended St. Vincent Prep School at Latrobe, Pa. He continued his college and higher education under the direction of the Benedictine Fathers, also at Latrobe, Pa. In 1953, Mr. Schaut came to Tidewater, and for nine years he was office manager for Crown Central Petroleum Distribution plant. Following four years of employment in the claims department of Hennis Freight Lines, he was hired by Sea Land Services where he subsequently became chief rate clerk. He retired from Sea Land after 18 years of service.

Mr. Schaut was a member of the Tidewater Community Band. He was a choir member and Eucharistic minister at St. Paul's Catholic Church. He also sang with the choir at Broad Street United Methodist Church for 12 years, taught a Sunday school class, and was very active in the fellowship there.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Britton Schaut; a stepson and his wife, Allen and Dianna Morely of Richmond; a brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Betty Schaut; and a sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Arthur Andres, both of St. Marys, Pa.

A Memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Paul's Catholic Church at 1 p.m. Saturday Jan. 20, 1996, by the Rev. Joseph Slowik. The family will receive friends for one hour after the service and other times at his home. Foster Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to: St. Paul's Catholic Church, Building Fund, 518 High St. Portsmouth, Va. 23704 or to a charity of choice.
