BERNADETTE S. HOOKS

Bernadette Smith Hooks, 46, of the first block of River Green Court, died Jan. 12, 1996, in Chesapeake.

She was a licensed practical nurse for Maryview Hospital and Manning Convalescent Home. She was a native of Portsmouth and the widow of Marvin Lee Hooks Sr. She attended Tidewater Community College.

Mrs. Hooks was born on the 11th day of August 1949. She died on a Friday in the beginning of the year. Most of us are busy setting goals and making resolutions for the year. So in her death there remains many goals and resolutions to reach and to keep. Bernadette has touched us all. Our task is to draw from her what positive lesson her life might teach us.

She is survived by a daughter, Victoria McKenzie of Portsmouth; two sons, Darrell A. Smith of Portsmouth, Melvin Hooks of Chesapeake; step children, Ethel Sawyer, Danny Hooks and Cecil Hooks, all of Portsmouth, Marvinia Hooks and Marvin Hooks Jr., both of New York; three sisters, Jeannette Smith and Joyce Norman, both of Portsmouth, and Marguerite Hill of Suffolk; four brothers, Scott A. Smith Jr., Washington, D.C., Scott A. Smith III and Robert E. Smith, both of Portsmouth, and Stanley Smith of Virginia Beach; 16 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Jennie M. Smith, and father, Scott A. Smith Sr.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday by the Rev. Joe B. Fleming in Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing will be at Corprew Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Thursday. The family will be at the home of her sister, Jeannette Smith, 243 Webster Ave., Portsmouth, and will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
