Luther Carlton Ellis, 51, of 630 W. Washington St., died Jan. 15, 1996.
Mr. Ellis was a graduate of Bluefield College, Cumberland College, and Virginia State University with degrees in voice performance and music education. Mr. Ellis was born in Suffolk. He retired from teaching after 24 years in November 1993. His teaching included four years in Southampton County and 20 years in the City Of Franklin. His career included teaching all levels of music from kindergarden through the college level. He was an active member of the Virginia Education Association and the National Education Association. He served the VEA most recently as a district resident. He was Teacher of the Year in 1993. Mr. Ellis was predeceased by his mother, Mary Pauline Ellis.
He is survived by his father, Charles T. Ellis of Suffolk; sister, Thomesine Ellis Draper of Suffolk; a brother, Lonnie Ellis of Charlotte, N.C.; maternal grandmother, Janette Sherrell of Hickory, N.C.; and two nieces, Maryvonne Draper of Richmond, and Velvet Ellis Calhoun of Charlotte, N.C.
A funeral service will be conducted at Hill Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Charles W. Thompson. Memorial donations may be made to Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad, First Baptist Church Music Department, Bluefield College Music Fund, or Bluefield College, Bluefield, Va. The family will be at the home of Thomesine E. Draper, 807 East Riverview Drive, Suffolk.
