The coaches at West Virginia apparently saw something in Norview's Dwayne Potts that the Eastern District coaches missed.
Potts, a 6-foot, 190-pound running back and defensive back, said Monday he will sign with the Mountaineers as a safety. Potts was a second-team all-district running back but received no honors on defense.
``His best football is ahead of him,'' Norview coach Will Robinson said.
Potts led the Pilots with 46 points and was second in rushing with 459 yards. He scored three touchdowns in a game against both Lake Taylor and Great Bridge.
Potts, who carries a 3.1 grade-point average in his core courses and scored 910 on the SAT, also visited Pittsburgh, Maryland and East Carolina.
``I picked West Virginia because I like the campus and I have a chance to play early,'' he said.
Potts, who also wrestles and runs track, first attracted West Virginia's interest when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds at the Norfolk combine last spring, Robinson said.
``I hope to bring speed and toughness to the program,'' Potts said. ``I have the ability to do whatever it takes to get the job done.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo
