Commander John S.E. Jiannas, of the U.S. Navy (Ret.) 55, died Jan. 14, 1996, at Virginia Beach General Hospital.
Cmdr. Jiannas survived almost nine years after a heart transplant, but lost a Courageous two-year battle with cancer. He was a 1962 graduate of Rice University in Houston, Texas. Cmdr. Jiannas served 24 years in the Navy, including tours of duty in the U.S., Vietnam, Italy, Belgium, England and Germany.
He is survived by his wife, Gabriele of Virginia Beach, and his son, Nikos, of Visalia, Calif.
There will be a memorial service conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 1996, at the Chapel of the Good Shepard, Oceana Naval Air Station by Chaplain Fred A. Rothermel. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the Virginia Beach General Hospital Auxiliary. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, are handling arrangements.
