State police on Tuesday identified the man charged with fatally shooting a stranded motorist Sunday as Cory Delaurencio, 19.
Delaurencio is a sailor stationed at the Norfolk Naval Base, state police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said. Delaurencio's exact assignment wasn't available.
Delaurencio was charged with murder, attempted larceny and using a gun in a crime. He allegedly shot another sailor, 26-year-old Traibeon L. Thomas, near Thomas' disabled car on the shoulder of the Virginia Beach-Norfolk Expressway just before midnight Sunday.
Thomas, who was stationed aboard the tank landing ship La Moure County, had returned to his disabled car after calling a towing company when he found a man in the vehicle. Thomas confronted the man and was shot in the head. Delaurencio was arrested after a car that looked like the suspect's vehicle seen entering the Oceana Naval Air Station, police said.
