The slayings of two Norfolk women, whose bodies were found two hours apart in separate areas of the city last week, are similar and may be connected, police said Tuesday.
Police spokesman Larry Hill described Karan D. Miller and Angela D. Hawkins as ``street walkers'' who frequented the same neighborhood. He said police are still investigating the possibility the deaths were linked.
``We cannot say they were linked until there's an arrest,'' Hill said during a news conference. ``Right now they may not be related.''
But, Hill said, these similarities could point to a connection:
The women were known prostitutes who mainly worked in the same area.
The bodies were found just two hours apart.
The bodies were found outside.
Hill said both women were last seen alive either late the night of Jan. 10 or early the next morning. He would not say how they were killed.
``We are still withholding the cause of death at this time because it is one of our main investigative clues that we have in the case,'' Hill said.
``It appears they died in a similar way,'' he said.
A student arriving at Lake Taylor Middle School Jan. 11 discovered the body of Miller, 29, in the parking lot shortly after 7 a.m.
Hawkins' body was found about two hours earlier in the 9200 block of Marlow Ave., located several miles from Lake Taylor in the Pamlico neighborhood near the Norfolk Naval Air Station. A resident saw the body lying in the street.
Hawkins, 36, and Miller were known to frequent the Denby Park/Monticello Village neighborhoods, which are roughly between the locations where the bodies were discovered, Hill said.
The women often were seen around Fort Worth Avenue, San Antonio Boulevard, the 300 block of East Little Creek Road and the 500 block of Ashlawn Drive. Their home addresses were not released.
``We're looking into if they knew each other,'' Hill said. ``I would think they probably did.''
Police do not know where the two women were killed, Hill said. But investigators were considering the possibility the bodies were driven to where they were found. The bodies were fully clothed.
Hill said he met early Tuesday with the two teams investigating the homicides.
``They are still digging and digging and digging,'' Hill said. ``Investigators need a lot of help,'' he said. MEMO: Police are asking anyone with any information to call 911 or Crime Line
