Can you give me the address where I can obtain a picture of a ship that has been taken off the active rolls in the Navy? It was sunk during World War II in 1941 or 1942.

There are two places that should be able to help you. You can write to the U.S. Naval Institute Photo Service at 118 Maryland Ave., Annapolis, Md. 21402-5035 or call the office at (410)268-6110. Or try the Naval Historical Center, Washington Navy Yard, Washington, D.C. 20374-0571.

I was wondering if the Hayler (DD 997) is based out of Norfolk, or Mayport or Charleston.

The destroyer's homeport is Norfolk.

I'd like to know where I can pick up a Navy cruise ship book I had lost.

For starters, contact the ship's Morale Welfare and Recreation Department or Public Affairs Officer to see if the ship may have extra copies. If copies aren't available from the ship or the ship has been decommissioned, there are other possibilities. Attempt to locate a shipmate who may have an extra copy; try a second-hand book dealer; attempt to obtain a copy from the book's publisher; or go to a local antiquarian bookstore for a book search or contact a major military book dealer.

Also, the Navy Department Library/Naval Historical Center at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., has some copies of cruise books in their archives. These may be viewed by the public; however, they are unable to provide reproductions of the publications. If the library has two copies of a post-World War II cruise book, your local library may request an inter-library loan. This would enable you to view the cruise book at your local library rather than making a special trip to Washington. It is highly recommended that anyone interested in viewing a cruise book contact the Navy Library. Send your requests to Navy Department Library, Navy Yard, 901 M Street, S.E., Washington, D.C., 20374-5060, or call (202)433-4131. The Navy Department Library is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

I was assigned to a ship that has been decommissioned for about 20 years. I've been trying to attend one of the ship's reunions, however, I have not seen any announcements in any publication. Is there any way I can find out if the ship does have reunions?

You're in luck. The Naval Institute has a Navy reunion hot line that has contact people from various military organizations. Call (410)268-6110 for more information. by CNB
