`FRANCHISE PLAYER' PRAISED FOR PILING UP MAURY'S POINTS

Maury girls basketball coach Lamont Walker calls senior Shawn'te Snead ``my franchise player. I call the other young players my future,'' he said.

For good reason. Snead is piling up the points for Maury. Her 18.5 points per game is second in South Hampton Roads.

``She has a lot of heart and hustle out there,'' Walker said. ``Her jump shot really isn't a jump shot. She gets most of her points on breakaways and steals.''

Walker is enjoying his first season as a head coach, and already he's planning a different agenda for next season. And the first item: Work harder during the offseason.

``Virginia Beach and Chesapeake definitely have an advantage with summer camps,'' said Walker, who formerly coached jayvee ball at Lake Taylor and Booker T. Washington. ``Next year I'll be trying to start a summer camp or even a Christmas tournament.''

Granby wrestling coach John Cerminara is looking forward to his team's first-ever meeting with powerhouse Great Bridge on Saturday afternoon. Granby, Norcom and Wilson wrestle at the Chesapeake high school beginning at 1 p.m.

``It's a good way to judge how good we are,'' Cerminara said. ``The guys know Great Bridge. We've just never wrestled them in a match before.''

And the match of the day might be Granby's Chris Martin versus Great Bridge's Travis Woodhouse at 145. Martin is undefeated this season and was second in the state last year.

``He has all kind of talent,'' Cerminara said. ``He never stops working.'' Martin wrestled 119 as a sophomore and 135 as a junior.

Cerminara said he goes into every dual hoping to win, but against Great Bridge he's mainly looking at individual matchups since he expects he'll see the Wildcats again at regionals.

``If we lose, everybody expects it,'' he said. ``If we win, well that's icing on the cake.''

Better late than never: Plaudits to the Eastern District boys all-league volleyball team voted on by league coaches. The Granby boys (6-2) won the first-ever regular season.

Player of the year honors go to Granby senior outside hitter Aron Tabor.

First-team selections were Norview's Willie Richardson and Andre Davis, Maury's Parker Coursaul, Lake Taylor's Garrison Hunter, Booker T. Washington's George Wilson and Granby's Brian Jones.

Making the second team were Ricardo Trevison (Maury), Kendrick Byrd and David Morrow (Booker T.), Jason Frizzell (Lake Taylor), Daniel Greathouse (Granby) and Mark Sofa (Norview).

Honorable Mention: Tiran Matthews and Bradley Albus (Granby).
