MAN, WOMAN DIE IN SEPARATE ACCIDENTS

Two people died in two accidents late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning in Chesapeake, police said.

The first accident occurred just before midnight as 41-year-old Larry Mason Evans headed north on Military Highway.

As Evans approached the Gilmerton Bridge, his car left the road, became airborne and then rolled down an embankment before coming to rest beside the road.

Evans, of the 1500 block of Laurel Ave., was apparently wearing a seatbelt, police said. He died at the scene.

The second accident occurred about 5 a.m. on the high-rise bridge on Interstate 64.

A tractor-trailer with steel bars strapped to its trailer had stalled just west of the top of the bridge.

Shortly after the driver stopped the rig, a woman driving a rented moving truck about 50 mph ran into the back of the tractor-trailer, state police said.

The steel bars on the back of the trailer completely ran through the moving truck, killing Joyce B. Rodriquez.

Rodriquez, 56, lived in the New Church area on the Eastern Shore, police said.

State police said the woman may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not identified. by CNB
