SOME CLEAR-CUT FAVORITES EMERGING

THE BEACH DISTRICT swimming scene produced its clear-cut favorites in boys and girls meets last Friday, setting up a couple of showdowns today that could determine champions.

With victories in two separate meets, the First Colonial and Kempsville boys teams pushed to 5-0 - making today's tri-meet with Ocean Lakes at the Kempsville Recreation Center crucial. First Colonial also still must face third-place Cox in the season finale. A Kempsville victory over First Colonial would all but shore up the district's first boys crown.

In Kempsville's 25-point victory over Cox Friday, the Chiefs were victorious in six of the 11 events. First Colonial, meanwhile, scored a 43-point victory over Tallwood and Princess Anne - capturing 10 of 11 events.

Kempsville's John McLaren won the 50 free and participated in his team's winning effort in the 200 and 400 free relays. Mark Giusto won in the 100 free and 200 IM and was on the 400 free relay team.

Cox left itself as the only unbeaten girls team (at 5-0) with tri-meet victories over Salem and Kempsville. All three teams entered the competition at 3-0.

Kempsville and First Colonial enter today's meet with Ocean Lakes at Kempsville tied for second place at 4-1. Cox goes up against Tallwood and Bayside and is favored to jump to 7-0.

In last Friday's meet, Marcy Laderberg returned from a holiday trip to the eighth annual American Maccabi Games in Argentina to lead Cox with victories in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstrokes. She also swam the starting leg on the winning 200 medley relay winner. Salem's Shannon Turlip turned in an equally impressive preformance with wins in the 200 and 500 free and a leg in the winning 400 free relay.
